Where to Get Bones for Bone Broth
We get most of our bones from cooking a whole organic chicken on the grill or in the oven. We store the bones in a plastic bag in the freezer until I’m ready to make broth.
You could get bones from rotisserie chickens, chicken legs or any other cut of meat that has bones in them, or ask for bones at a local butcher shop or grocery store.
Tools Needed for Instant Pot Bone Broth
Steps to Make Bone Broth in an Instant Pot
- Put wire roasting rack in Instant Pot.
- Lay the bones on the rock.
- Add all the other ingredients on top (garlic, celery, carrots, onion, bay leaves, and apple cider vinegar)
- Season everything generously with salt
- Add filtered water until it reaches the top of the bones/food. It should be below the MAX line on your Instant Pot.
- Pressure Cook on High for 60 minutes. Let naturally release.
- Remove large chunks of bone and vegetables (I use a tongs)
- Strain and use funnel to pour broth into jars.
How to Store Bone Broth
You can keep broth in a sealed container, such as a mason jar, in the fridge for up to a week. We store broth in the refrigerator in quart or pint glass mason jars.
For longer storage, freeze or pressure can.
We usually wait until the bone broth cools before we pour it into plastic containers to freeze. We used to store broth in glass jars, but after having a jar shatter in the freezer (despite leaving headspace), we switched to plastic.
