ARE WALNUTS PEANUT-FREE?
Walnuts are peanut-free. Walnuts are a tree nut and peanuts are part of the legume family. However, tree nuts like walnuts are often processed on the same equipment as peanuts, creating a risk for cross-contact allergic reactions.
Even though companies usually follow cleaning and testing procedures for the top 8 allergens, tiny unseen amounts of peanut protein can remain on the equipment. This is referred to as cross-contact or cross-contamination. Learn more from FARE.
Our daughter has reacted to food that was processed on the same equipment as peanuts, so finding foods made in dedicated peanut-free facilities is a major blessing for peanut allergy kids and parents.
CAN YOU BE ALLERGIC TO WALNUTS AND NOT PEANUTS?
A peanut allergy and a walnut allergy are two different things.
- You can be allergic to both peanuts and walnuts.
- You can be allergic to peanuts and not walnuts.
- You can be allergic to walnuts and not peanuts.
Working with a medical professional, testing, and tracking reactions helps you can figure out which nut your body reacts to and which it can safely eat.
