Can You Be Allergic to Multivitamins?

Yes, you can be allergic to any ingredient in a multivitamin. Dairy, wheat, soy, tree nuts, peanuts, egg, fish, shellfish, and dyes are among the most common ingredients that can trigger allergic reactions.

When you’re dealing with allergies, you need to check labels of all products, including, but not limited to: food, vitamins, supplements, personal care items, and beauty products.

Anything that goes in your body or on your skin can trigger allergic reactions.

How to Check Vitamins for Food Allergy Safety

Just as you do with food labels, check the ingredient label on any supplements for the specific food allergen and other names. Here is a list of other hidden names for Peanuts.

When it doubt, contact the company’s customer service via phone, chat, or email to verify if the vitamins you are considering contain peanuts or if they are manufactured on shared equipment with peanuts. Always watch for reactions, especially when trying something new.

Do Vitamins Contain Nuts?

Some do! Coconut (considered a tree nut by the FDA) is fairly common, some supplements use nut flavoring, and others may be manufactured on shared equipment with peanuts or tree nuts.

Does Peanut Free Mean Nut Free?

No, “peanut free” does not necessarily mean “nut free.”

The term “nut free” can be confusing as to what it really means because tree nuts and peanuts are two different foods and two different allergens.

Tree nuts grow on trees (e.g., almonds, walnuts, cashews, pecans) while peanuts grow underground and are part of the legume family (along with lentils, peas, beans, and soybeans).
